WHAT IS KANDI???
if u clicked on this page without knowing what kandi is...shhh. its okay child. i will tell you. kandi is handmade jewelry...made out of pony beads!!!! its usually extremely colorful and associated with rave culture. kandi and rave culture share a deep bond, with kandi developing within it. theres stories that it used to be a sign that you sold drugs to make yourself more noticable to potential customers, but some early ravers say that it was always a friendship symbol. so, you can decide what you wanna believe. in 1993 at a rave in n.y, dj frankie bones paused his dj-ing(?) to break up a fight in the crowd. he said into the microphone, "you better start showing some peace, love, and unity or i will break your faces!!!!!" which is a moment that helped popularize PLUR (peace, love, unity, respect.) kandi slowly became increasingly a symbol of PLUR and the drug dealer story became less common. and, this is where i talk about the PLUR handshake!!!! the PLUR handshake is used to trade kandi. first, you both make a peace sign with your hands and touch it to the other person's (peace), then form a heart (love), pressed palms together (unity) and then intertwined fingers!! (respect.) then, you slide a bracelet from your wrist to theirs before hugging. in the mid 2000s, kandi became associated with other youth subcultures, including scene kids, whos culture flourished on myspace. and even later, in the late 2010s, early 2020s, kandi appeared in newer subcultures, such as scenecore. and in 2023, swifties started their own tradition similar to kandi, but they call it friendship bracelets.
